Dr. Mohit Kharbanda is a Senior Consultant in Internal Medicine and Senior Director of Critical Care at Desun Hospital & Heart Institute, Kolkata — a 750-bed tertiary care centre with a 190-bed critical care unit, including the only dedicated burns unit among corporate hospitals in the city. He leads the critical care and internal medicine teams, overseeing the assessment and management of critically ill patients with multiorgan involvement, and has been closely involved in the hospital’s JCI accreditation and multiple NABH assessments.
A graduate of Gandhi Medical College, Bhopal (MBBS, 1996) and Gajra Raja Medical College, Gwalior (MD, General Medicine, 2001), he trained further in critical care at Escorts Hospital & Research Centre, Faridabad, and AMRI Hospitals and Calcutta Medical Research Institute, Kolkata, before taking on his current leadership role at Desun Hospital. He holds the IDCCM, FNB (Critical Care), and FICCM qualifications, and over nearly three decades in medicine has managed critically ill patients across internal medicine, sepsis and multiorgan failure, mechanical ventilation, and hemodynamic monitoring.
Alongside clinical practice, he is Faculty & Examiner for DrNB Critical Care under the National Board of Examinations, and Consultant & Course Director for FCCS (Fundamental Critical Care Support). His academic interests centre on mechanical ventilation and hemodynamic monitoring, with a growing focus on the application of AI in critical care — alongside a personal interest in applying AI to financial markets.

Assessment and management of complex, critically ill patients with multiorgan involvement, spanning internal medicine, sepsis, and multisystem failure.
Focused expertise in managing patients with complex and prolonged ventilatory requirements — from difficult-to-oxygenate ARDS and refractory hypoxemia to weaning failure and tracheostomy planning. Experienced in advanced ventilator strategies, lung-protective and rescue modes, and bedside interpretation of ventilator graphics to guide moment-to-moment decisions in the sickest patients.
Special interest in patients with complex hemodynamic instability — undifferentiated and mixed shock states, right heart failure, and the interplay between ventilation and circulation in the critically ill. Uses advanced monitoring (including transthoracic echocardiography at the bedside) to individualize fluid, vasopressor, and inotropic therapy rather than relying on fixed protocols.
Broad-spectrum ICU practice spanning sepsis and septic shock, multiorgan failure, acute pancreatitis, burns, and post-surgical critical illness, in a high-turnover unit examining and managing 40–50 critically ill patients daily. Emphasis on protocol-driven care combined with individualized decision-making for the most complex, multisystem cases.
Faculty & Examiner for DrNB Critical Care under the National Board of Examinations, and Consultant & Course Director for FCCS. Regularly mentors residents, fellows, nurses, and technicians at the bedside, and has taught mechanical ventilation and hemodynamic monitoring at national and zonal ISCCM conferences and workshops for over a decade.
